Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, God Jul, Hyvää Joulua!

Enjoy the festivities and make the best of christmas, dont stress, take it easy, light a fire, sit with your family in front of it, eat good food. And just relax. And let the calmness bring you peace of mind.

Best wishes,

I just invented the time-machine! (Sort of)

i woke up. tired. why? thats another story. wearily got out of bed. grabbed my towel and headed for the shower. the floor in my bathroom was cold. i stepped in the shower and turned the water on.
from here on out i was no longer cold. nor was i annoyed about my tiredness. and i couldnt have worried less about school starting in 10min. because, i realised (while in the shower actually) that taking a warm shower, especially if youre cold and tired, is not entirely unlike hitting 88mph in a DeLorean. though, well you cant really go back in time. or back to the future for that matter. but what you *can* do is make time stand still. when youre in the shower everything besides the warm water on your head, shoulders and whatnot loses meaning. you have no worries. nothing stresses you. you just soak up the water and the warmth and let your mind wander to wherever it pleases. i think this might be a reason why so many great inventions and innovations have begun from a shower, Einstein came up with E equals mc squared while doodling on his fogged up shower doors. ive also come up with some of my greater ideas in the shower, ideas for scenes in my movies, and this.

so next time you need to come up with a great idea -- sleep little, wake up early, make sure its cold, fret about everything, be late for school/work/...just be late. then step in the shower and forget all about the afore mentioned.

RA D IOHE_AD

radiohead just came out with their long-awaited new album "in rainbows". and they didnt release it on album through a record label. instead they decided to release it on their website as a downloadable album. (though you can also buy a special edition physical album, with a hardcover book, two LPs and alls kinds of neat stuff). so how much does this, the most anticipated album of the year, cost you ask?

it's up to you.

no. it's really up to you.

seriously, theres an empty box at the checkout where you can fill in how much you want to pay for the album. if you decide to pay £0,00 its perfectly fine and acceptable.

A Cup of Tea and a Glass of Whiskey.

three hours ago i was sitting at home playing computer games and drinking a cup of tea. ten minutes ago i was sipping on a glass of whiskey. i have finally experienced the benefits of living in town. and it feels great. been waiting for this for a while now. so what happened you ask? well, when the tea was still hot on my lips my carnalitos called and asked if anything was happening today, and i suggested we go feel out my corner pub/bar "Hemingway's". so we all convened outside the pub after 15min and walked in. from this an evening of nothing special, just fantastic chilling at a nice bar, with a beer and then later a glass of whiskey, ensued. ive been waiting to do this for a long time. spontaneous chilling at a bar with good friends and good times. fantastic. and i just walked home from the bar, which is maybe 50m away from my house. beautiful.

oh and hemingway's is a very pleasant bar, i recommend it. at least the hemingways on my block.

good night.

Adaptation. (Nic Cage not included)

i was walking home throught town quite late in the night immersed in my music (Jose González at the time) and my thoughts and i started thinking about why ive felt to phlegmatic lately. the reason im really annoyed at my phlegmaticism is that ive been looking forward to moving out for the past two-three years and now that i finally did, i feel like im not enjoying it enough, and that im not doing all the things i had planned on doing. and i realised that maybe it has something to do with our basic human ability to adapt. i believe humans extraordinary adaptability is one of the main reasons weve thrived as a species, cold weather, arid terrain, versatile predators, we have adapted to everything nature has thrown at us.

but now in my case i think this basic ability has its downsides. though it is still an important trait in us and a very good one at that. but in my case, i feel like its been more of a burden. my getting accustomed so quickly to my new place and life in town has made me lose the perception of how great it actually is, and it has incredibly quickly become the norm for me. it feels like its always been like this, and thus i dont get around to doing all the things i had imagined/planned on doing when i move out. i feel like this has been a problem before as well, when i came out of the army i adapted to civilian life again really really quickly, which didnt give me time to enjoy the freedoms i once again enjoyed or the benefits of civilian life to the full extent. so i guess everything new just becomes the norm too quickly for me, so that i cant enjoy changes for the better as much as i should. maybe this will change, maybe it wont, who knows? but trust me, if you experience a change for the better in your life, grasp it with all your might, hold on to it and squeeze every last drop out of it. you will regret it if you dont. i might still have a chance to correct this wrong. only time will tell.

goodnight...

The Return of the Prodigal Son

im back. finally. took way too long, and i apologise. i just hope someone still wanders into my site, and if you are that someone please spread the word that Trip Fontaine is back on the map. so whats new you ask? well, ive moved out, i live in Hietalahti (in Helsinki), which is like a kilometer from the center of helsinki for you non-finnish people whoever you might be. its been really fantastic, living by my lonesome has been something ive been looking forward to for quite long. and now its here (has been for the past month) . . . and i feel fine. ive also started studying in a school very near me, its called Cityfolkhögskolan and i study documentary filmmaking. so far thats been absolutely fantastic. so all in all, you could say im doing quite well. however, the lack of football in my life is starting to take its toll, but that shall be fixed in the spring when the season for amateur teams starts...

last week i went to see quite a few movies at the Helsinki International Film Festival (Rakkautta & Anarkiaa), and id just like to suggest a few gems for you --first of all a good serious drama about confused skinheads in Thatcher's Britain -"This is England" and then a hilarious "walker and talker" (didnt invent that term..) about a couple in paris, pretty much arguing throughout the movie, fantastically funny -"2 Days in Paris", those of you who live in Helsinki or thereabouts have the chance to see it in the commercial release starting this friday (5.10). and if you want to be inspired to change the world go see "Sharkwater" (dont think its coming to a commercial release in finland...), an amazingly beautiful documentary about our misconceptions about sharks and their horrible state (7,000+ sharks are killed every hour). has a hint of pretentiousness, but never goes overtop to become annyoing in any way, its fantastic. go out of your way to see it.

so thats that for a short update, now i gotta go and enjoy the benefits of living in town.

this is the Odyssey, signing off...

PS. felt like the look needed a change to freshen things up a bit, and to emphasize a new phase in the evolution of my blog. :)

All apologies.

hiyall. whoever is still reading this blog. i am really really sorry for being so slow lately, and updating so unfrequently. maybe i can blame it on the summer. maybe i should blame it on global warming. whatever it is, i apologise for it. and also for writing anything interesting in the past months. ive just really gotten into Top 5 lists, and theyre a quick and easy way to keep this blog alive.. sort of. but dont fear, i will do my utmost to resume normal acticvity on this here blog as soon as school starts and life has some sort of structure to it. (thats in the beginning of september). im not giving any guarantees as to whats going to happen until then, but ill try to update occassionally to breath some life into my blog every once in a while. but ill be travelling quite a lot, so i doubt its gonna be anything earth shattering. but at least now you know what the deal-io is. so just be patient... and thank you to who ever still has some interest in what i have to say.

Flight of The Conchords, Fly!

i just received one of the greatest pieces of news in a while. regarding entertainment. flight of the conchords, the 4th most popular folk comedy duo in new zealand, are gonna start their own TV show. called.. Flight of The Conchords. amazing. if you dont know who they are, go to youtube and search for flight of the conchords and watch at least "Jenny", "Hiphoppotamus vs. Rhymenocareous" & "Business Time". they are utterly fantastic. so if you havent heard of them, check them out immediately.

and here we have an ad for the upcoming TV show, which airs on HBO (!). starting 17th June.

also if you go to myspace you can see the entire episode before it airs. its sweet. well worth it.

"youre so beautiful you could be a part-time model. ...but youd have to keep your normal job."

ps. the editing of the amsterdam video is taking a bit longer than expected, i always seem to misjudge the amount of time it takes to import all the raw footage. but dont despair, i shall have it ready in the near future.

Amsterdam Reprise

it would seem as if i have completely forsaken my blog. but thats not the case. i have just been busy. :) i have an announcement of small proportions to make. i just realised that the short film im editing together of all the material we filmed in amsterdam can be reduced in quality (and posssibly length) so that i can post it on the web. i shall post it on my blog at the beginning of next week, since i shall have it done by the end of this one. however, if it for some reason turns out to be hugely huge, im afraid i probably wont post it. tho hugely huge things can always be made smaller, so in all probability youll see a clip here within 10days. so then youll get a better picture of what happened there, and how awesome it actually was. im off now.

Amsterdam

so here we go. finally something bout my trip, not probably enuf to satisfy your hunger. but anyway. it was a fantastic trip in every way (except that finland lost the damn ice hockey final.....), but every other aspect of the trip was ROKIN. just like you see in the pic below. we lived at my friend ayus place in haarlem, which is like 15min by train from dam. a stylish house right by the canal, steep skinny stairs and a damn chilled couch. dunno really what to say, i dont jaksa to go through everthing we did. but yeah, after a couple of museums, quite a few pubs & clubs, a cpl of hockey games, a significant amount of rokin, and too many heinekens later my crew left. this being last sunday, after which i went to rotterdam for most of the remaining days (an hour away from dam), but thats a different story.
anyway, it was a sweet trip, very chilled and totally rokin. I <3 Amsterdam. im going there again probably within a month, or latest in the summer. and yes, they DO drown 'em in that shit (ie. mayonaise).

dank je wel

Rare Exports, Inc.

you just gotta love finland.

Evolution Revolution

and you thought we were descendants of apes. pah!

Peanut Butter.link

Original Schmoriginal.

i was just in the shower thinking about Tim Burton. and originality. and i started wondering why were so obsessed with being original, especially when it comes to movies. i mean a good movie is a good movie, doesnt have to be original to be good. but still we somehow, for some reason, value original ideas or ways of making something to the point that we put it up on a pedestal. im not saying theres anything bad with liking/valueing original ideas, i know i do, but im just wondering why we value them so much? i mean, basically an original idea is just a new idea. or a new take on something old. so is it this that attracts us? the freshness, the newness of something. the constant craving for something new. maybe its some sort of basic human trait, a constant strive for new things, experiences and inventions. i guess its this in us that has resulted in the amazing leaps forward we have accomplished as humans. i wonder what our world would be like if columbus hadnt wanted to find a *new* route to india or einstein hadnt found a *new* theory to explain the world or the wright brothers hadnt followed through on the idea of a *new* form of transport, i think you can see where this is going. maybe its this trait in us humans, the craving for anything new, that still sticks with us and causes to require/praise new and original ideas in films. we are no longer content with something thats been done before, no matter how great or fantastic it might be. but who cares? originality is great. new ways of making films, and new ideas and such, should be encouraged and supported all the way, however we should still never judge a movie for solely its originality, an extremely original crap movie is still crap. nothing to it. but then again, why should we stay on the earth when we can go to the moon?

think about it, think, think about it.
(flight of the conchords)

ps. lets not forget "old" ways of making movies, such as stop-motion animation. they will always have a place in peoples hearts and minds.

Do you feel lucky?

welcome. in order to keep my blog fresh and attractive, i shall do what everyone does when they need to attract the interest of others, hold a competition! im gonna keep this brief and very to the point. the rules are simple, if you answer the two-part question that follows correctly you will win a fantastic prize, which is a SURPRISE EVENT with me, free of charge. i know i know. how can i just give away something amazing like that? well, im just such a good person. its easy for people like me. anyway, the winner will be notified personally, and receive the fantastic prize on a later disclosed date. so answer this if you can:

1. From what song (including artist name) is the "name" of my blog - "dot dot dot, and i feel fine" (the 'name' of the window that youre surfing in right now)?

Part Deux. What does the name "The Oyster Boy" (in the URL of this blog) refer to?

There you go. answer those two simple questions and you might be the winner. if there are many correct answers, the winner will be randomly selected from all those who have answered correctly. also, a bag of candy will be raffled off between ALL participants. so ANYONE can WIN.

send your answers to my email, or leave a comment to this post if youre not afraid others might steal your answers.
the winner will be announced on Tuesday 20th March.

My Top Tip of the Week

my apologies for missing last weeks top tip. however, this week the movies will be so awesomely fantastic, that the movies i wouldve suggested last week, will feel SO middle of last week. lets keep it short and concise, to the point.

movie to see at the googlo-plex: The Good Shepherd. if you like a movie involving men in long over-coats and hats, peering suspiciously over their shoulders, meeting in shady back-allies, and the phrase "TOP SECRET", then this is the movie for you. fantastically directed by Robert De Niro, who also plays a small part in the film, and equally well acted in by Matt Damon. both performances, as director and leading-man, contribute fantastically to the over-all mood of the film, you even find yourself becoming suspicious of the person sitting next to you (did he just slip something into my drink?). matt damon is stunning as the strong silent yet smart type, and i believe he says less than Mother Theresa in a confessional, during the movie. however, a word of warning, if youre not interested in secret agencies, and even secreter men, then this is NOT the movie for you. it was on the limits of being too long and tedious even for me (note. LIMITS, it wasnt too long, dont be put off by that comment), and i liked it a lot.

rent-a-thon: to counter-act, the seriousness and highly sombre feel of the Good Shpeherd, i will suggest a fantastic slightly brainless stoner-road-trip comedy: Harold & Kumar go to White Castle. nothing to explain. just see it. but remember... its awesome.

actually, go and see the Good Shepherd at the movies (sleep well the night before), and then afterwards go with your friends and buy a huge bag of candy and maybe some nice brownies, and rent Harold & Kumar, and watch it. make it into a veritable movie-fest-night. youre welcome. good night.

A breath of fresh Air.

air came out with a new album last friday. fantastic. ive always loved them, and luckily this album is no different. havent had time to listen to it that much yet, but its standard air, which is a very good thing. so far not as catchy as some of airs previous albums, however, what it lacks in catchy stand-out songs, it makes up as a whole album. so if you want music to chill to, accept no substitute. air is the only way to fly. and their new album is as good as any for that purpose. so if youre interested in air, listen to their new album 'Pocket Symphony'. but do listen to the ALBUM, as a whole, it works really well as an album. air.pocket symphony 8.5/10

sticking to the theme of music, ive been introduced to a new band, 'Von Hertzen Brothers'. have only heard the first two songs from their semi-new album 'Approach', but if the rest is similar, then we have a winner. fantastic progeish rock. the second fantastic finnish artist/band ive been introduced to in the past couple of months (the other being Tuomo), thank you linda. it seems as if we still have a chance, finnish music might still see the light. i am very pleased. von hertzen brothers.approach 8/10 (based on the first two songs - 9/10)
EDIT 28.3: von hertzen brothers.approach 7/10 (the opening songS are superb. but the rest are a bit middleclass, but good nevertheless)

so now then, it seems i have become a music critic as well. well i guess i have to live up to it in the future as well then. so, from now on, whenever i buy a new album i shall review it here, for the pleasure/displeasure of all of you.

One kebab. Keep the change.

i read an article in NYT yesterday (it always seems to start from an article) about racism. they had interviewed three aspiring politicians on their views on immigration and immigrants. i wont start to go through what they said in the article, but needless to say it was ridiculous. of course this is only my opinion, but i am fairly sure that most of you would agree with me (read the article if you have time and access to NYT).
but im not here to argue against racism or the politicians, i do believe my stance on racism is pretty clear to the most of you. what i came here to talk about was another kind of "racism", a kind that i myself am guilty of. an intellectual who argued against the three politicans in the article reminded me of something i talked about a long time ago with my co-leaders when i was a youth leader at a skriba. he said that he and his friends had been guilty of "reverse-racism", where a somali man who was drunk and very disruptive had disturbed their drinking at a bar, and instead of telling him to piss off, like they would have had it been a finnish man, they had asked him to join them and subsequently suffered the entire evening of his loutish company. i have realised that i am guilty of something similar to this, i am VERY anti-racist, and i am used to a multi-ethinc culture, having lived abroad a couple of years during my life, i also have friends of many varying races, even a couple of caucasians.
but nevertheless, what i noticed in that conversation long ago, was that i sometimes got the feeling that all black people are good people when i saw them (this only relates to strangers though, i dont notice a difference with my friends, or friends of my friends, dunno why that is). which is almost as racist as being overtly racist. its obviously not as bad as hating everyone of a different race, but it means that i notice the difference, and that it registers in my mind subconciously or conciously. and this is a big problem i think. there should be no difference, one shouldnt notice the colour of another persons skin. i think that most of us have at some point been guilty of such behaviour, and i can imagine that this is also the case for most moderate/liberal finns. i guess this is what you get for living in such a homogenous society. and i think the only way to rid us of this is to create a more multi-cultural society, and make diversity an everyday thing. and inter-racial couples are great, just blend all the races together and soon we wont have any races, and no racism.

so again i wanna bang on about understanding and compromise. try to understand your fellow person and instead of dismissing their views and thoughts, try putting yourself in their shoes and think about it from their point of view. just do your best to understand other people, and forget hate. and listen. listen. listen. i know i will. at least do my best.

Academy Awards 2007

So then. all in all a pretty satisfactory result for the oscars. Dreamgirls only won like two, or something... and it didnt even win best song! it was beat by an inconvenient truth. awesome. little miss sunshine got two big ones, supporting actor and best original screenplay. fantastic. terrific. absolutely. and pans labyrinth won 3 oscars (cinematography, art direction, make-up), which was fantastic, however, it didnt win best foreign film.. sucks balls. and scorsese finally won an oscar, which he definitely earned. and babel didnt win best picture. the departed won, which was really good. so there. all in all pretty good, two major disappointments, pans labyrinth not winning best foreign film, and rinko kinkuchi (dunno, if i spelled that correctly) not winning best supporting actress, tho most of the annoyance in that category came from jennifer hudson winning it for dreamgirls. anyone else but her. cate blanchett, abigail breslin. or rinko. but no. well, you cant win 'em all.

///////LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE WON BEST SCREENPLAY!!!!!!!
(sadly Pans Labyrinth didnt get the best Foreign Film oscar...)

((its on. its happening. the oscars are being dealt out as we speak, and so far so good. pans labyrinth has gotten two awards, and little miss sunshine one. fantastic. ill keep you posted.

Best Art Direction: Pans Labyrinth
Best Makeup: Pans Labyrinth
Best Supporting Actor: Alan Arkin, LMS

Best Animated Feature: Happy Feet. Cars lost :(
Best Adapted Screenplay: The Departed. Borat lost. mega :(

NV-GS180ES

I BOUGHT A VIDEOCAMERA TODAY! style. very style. or well, technically i ordered it, just have to go pick it up (and pay for it...) as soon as the stores are open, ie. monday. but damn. ive been waiting for this day for a while now. it feels good. im gonna be able to film random things that are cool. and also practice. and make short films. and stuff. itll be awesome. and youll be the first to know bout everything.
also as a side note, dont you think that cameras have awful names? the one i bought is called the Panasonic NV-GS180ES. now how unimaginative is that. they should be like cars. the Sony Focus. perfect. Canon X-Type. maybe the S at the end of the name for my camera stands for 'Sport'. cool. ES. extra sport. maybe we should write a petition to all the camera manufacturers, so that they change the names of their products to something snazzier. and more chic. or then again. maybe i could study for my entrance exams instead of thinking about writing petitions to sony.

good night. and good luck.

Change. (announced)

its been quiet. a little too quiet. meaning, i havent made much progress on Change. ive still been busy with school things. and i also realised recently that my release date of June-July this year, is pointless. im not in a hurry. and i really want to make this work. and put everything i have into this film. so, sadly for you, the release date has been pushed back to Autumn/Winter 2007. but rest assured, this will mean that the film will be just that much better. thats pretty much it. im gonna start writing the script any day now, so youll hear more from me when that happens. thats it. nothing more exciting sorry.

Release Date: Autumn/Winter 2007

My Top Tip of the Week

allright. so youre at home. bored. flipping through the channels and realising once again, that there isnt anything good on TV. and you dont feel like going out or doing anything intensly physical. so you decide you want to see a movie. but now what? what movie are you gonna go see. or rent. you have a problme. but fear no more! i am here. so here, ill start dishing out advice on what i believe is worth seeing, in my weekly Top Tip of the Week, every week. ill suggest a movie you shouldnt miss and also if you have missed them, some classic very good rent-a-movies. lets get to it then.

movie to see at the theatre: El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth). no question about it. magical. fight between good and evil and how innocence is stronger than anything. just beautiful. second best movie of 2006 (after little miss sunshine, tough crowd). and if you dont believe me, check out imDb.com, ("Received a 22min standing ovation at the Cannes film festival" + 56th on their top 250 films ever.)

rent-a-movie: Before Sunrise. if youve seen it, then rent the sequel Before Sunset. or actually. just rent them both. so my actual suggestion would be rent both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, they arent that long so itll be like a 3hr movie+, when you put them together. just amazing films. just talking throughout the movie. about people falling in love. and just talking to each other and learning to know each other. amazing in their simplicity. and wonderful. heart warming.

Simply The Best.

i went to Tori again. this time for breakfast today. and it was amazing. still the best overall place to eat in helsinki. i first ordered tea, which came in a really large awesomelooking mug accompanied by a glass with many different bags of tea to choose from and as the pièce de résistance a mug of honey with one of those cool wooden honey-sticks. awesome. while i was marvelling at the fantastic tea mug and its entourage, the kitchen made itself busy preparing my breakfast, which came shortly thereafter. it consisted of two pieces of tomato/cheese toast and a bowl of youghurt + cereal. the yog and cereal was FANTASTIC, simple plain youghurt (maustamaton) with really good basic crunchy müesli with black+blue berries (in the style of the same müesli from START, if not the exact same). AND it only cost 1,70€, if ordered as a side-dish for something else, which i dont think is a bad price at all. the toast was good, nothing spectacular, i could order it again, but probably wont. but no complaints on that front.
however, again, it was just the entire experience of eating at Tori. amazing. awesome. the food was great and cheap, and the place looked as cosy and chill as ever, and even the tea experience warrants a visit of its own. and as a final note, the music was brilliant as always. this time with the perfect mood setter for a morning, with old school Frankie S. & Co., and many christmas songs as well, which was suprisingly pleasant. so again. take time and go to Tori. make an evening of it, take your friends with you and enjoy a nice dinner in an awesome place, with great atmosphere. or just go get your morning cup of tea and cereal from there. its worth it.

All the small things.

its astonishing how much hatred there is in this little world of ours. i saw the last king of scotland yesterday and was again reminded about the atrocities some people have committed, i also saw blood diamond recently and it was the same deal there (both good movies btw..). its amazing we ever get anything done, since so much energy is used up on hatred and anger. i dont claim to understand either of the situations represented in the movies fully, but i believe i still have the right to judge the hatred portrayed in them. there arent many situations that have gotten better through violence, sure sometimes it can be the only way out (world war II... what wouldve happened if the Allies hadnt fought back?), but it should and CAN never be the first option.

im lucky enough to live in a safe country like Finland, and i havent experienced much violence in my life personally, if any at all. i have on the other hand lived in africa two years of my life, but again in a comparably safe country (Namibia). and i am very grateful for what my country has given me, and i consider myself to be lucky. however, the vast majority of the population of the world doesnt have the security and stability i enjoy here in finland (hope this doesnt sound cocky, its not my aim at all if it does.) and there are just so many things awry with the world we live in. famine. drought. global warming. corporate power. corruption. civil wars. genocides. murder. rape. poverty. the list goes on. and i sometimes get the feeling that theres nothing we can do to prevent these horrible things from happening, unless we have either power or money. i get that "im only one man" feeling, what can i do? but thats precisely where it needs to start from. one person. its the small things that make a change. the small actions that make this world a better place. and we can always keep pressuring the people who DO have power and money to make the large changes.

but lets just start by smiling a bit more. laugh out loud. dont be afraid to make conversation with the person sitting next to you. hug them. maybe you can start recycling things. use your car less. and be more understanding. remember, youre not always right. neither am i. and neither is she. love. tell someone you care about them. call your friend and tell them that you love them. write a letter to the powers-that-be. compromise. and if theres only one thing you do --

LISTEN.

its the small things...anton.

hug the person next to you.

Change. (announced)

ive been working on change for every day of the past week, and im almost done with the basics of each segment. so i will be starting to write the script fairly soon, and im gonna have a first draft done by 16th February (oh no! deadline.), so you can look forward to that. but anyway, my main point with this post was to let you know that another part of the heggmeister-clan will be drawn into the making of this movie, namely my brother A. (anonymity creates a more mysterious aura around him). he will make a short documentary about global warming and the climate change, for the film, youll find out how it fits into the whole later on.. probably next week with me having finished a first draft ofthe script.
thats it, gotta go watch syriana now.

its snowing again. -anton

ps. i finally saw The Departed, very very good movie, worth seeing. but anyway cool irish/boston punk song from the movie, by none other than Dropkick Murphy's (the beginnings especially awesome)

Sunday.

its been an uneventful day. nothing to say. ill just leave you with, as accustomed to already, a good song to listen to. this time coming from a surprising artist. not my usual cup of tea, but this time she made a really good song.

Golden boy.

its oscar season. the nominees have been outed and the winners will be presented in less than a month. its the time of year when every self-appointed movie buff gives his/her five dimes on who will win and who should win. so i guess i cant be any less of a movie buff than anyone else. here goes. well make this into neat and tidy lists. i like lists. ive mentioned that before i think. so batting first, for the academy - the nominees!

Best Movie - Babel, The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine, Letters from Iwo Jima, The Queen

Best Director - Clint (Letters from Iwo Jima), Stephen Frears (The Queen), Alejandro G. Iñarritu (Babel), Paul Greengrass (United 93), Martin Scorsese (The Departed)

Best Actor - Leo DiCaprio (Blood Diamond), Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson), Peter O'Toole (Venus), Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland)

Best Actress - Penelope Cruz (Volver), Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal), Helen Mirren (The Queen), Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada), Kate Winslet (Little Children)

Best Supporting Actor - Alan Arkin (LMS), Jackie E Haley (Little Children), Djimon Honsou (Blood Diamond), Eddie Murphy (Dreamgirls), Mark Wahlberg (The Departed)

Best Supporting Actress - Adriana Barrazza (Babel), Cate Blanchett (Notes on a Scandal), Abigail Breslin (LMS), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel)

and now, my opinion.

Best Movie -> will win: Babel, just cos its so "big" and meaningful. an epic movie, with solid acting. very oscar material.
should win: Little Miss Sunshine, just wonderfully real and human. deals with real emotions and real situations, with characters one can relate to. its just a wonderful feel good movie. and its hilarious.

Best Director -> will win: Martin Scorsese, he deserves it. finally. a legend. and no oscar as of yet. come on. (and ive heard that The Departed is good.)
should win: see above.

Best Actor -> will win: Forest Whitaker, havent seen the movie. but you can tell its oscar material. and its such a hardcore role for him. just very oscar. and again, "meaningful" role, "meaningful" movie.
should win: Ryan Gosling, havent seen Half Nelson either, but its apparently really good. and also i loved Ryan in The United States of Leland and The Believer, and it would be good to see a young actor get the award.

Best Actress -> will win: Helen Mirren, its obvious. the queen. serious. come on.
should win: Helen Mirren maybe, havent seen any of the movies, so cant really say, but i do believe Helen Mirren will live up to the hype once i see the queen.

Best S.Actor -> will win: Eddie, probably, with all the hype around Dreamgirls its bound to win one of the big 'uns.
should win: Alan Arkin, again, cant really say bout the others, but Alan was fantastic as grandpa/dad/fatherinlaw in LMS, and the movie deserves at least one win.

Best S.Actress -> will win: Jennifer Hudson, two words: Dreamgirls
should win: Rinko Kikuchi/Abigail Breslin: Rinko was stupendous as the deaf japanese girl in Babel, i think she deserves it easy. but then again Abigail was fantastically cute and very good in LMS as well, tho i guess this has more to do with me wanting LMS to win something, if i think bout it seriously i think Rinko Kikuchi deserves it. she was phenomenal.

so there we have it. a short and sweet list of my predictions for February 25th. well see what happens.

id like to thank the academy....
anton

ps. didnt you find it tasteless to have the "Winner - Best Director, Cannes 2006" thingy in the beginning of Babel? in the trailer it would be fine to have it. but in the actual movie? come on. i felt that it was just so in your face, like hes warning us that were gonna see something amazing and really meaningful, so pay attention. this also relates to why my expectations fell a bit short with babel, which was beacuse iñarritu tried too hard to be meaningful and make a "big"/important movie, tho it was still very good, as you can see from the 5th position on my best of 2006. but still, come on. is iñarritu slightly full of himself?

The Great Beyond.

i just watched a Stephen Hawking tvshow today. hes awesome btw. insanely smart. you should read A Brief History of Time, its very good if youre interested in the universe and more. tho i could only understand pretty much a third of all the technical mumbo-jumbo (and id like to think that im somewhat smart. it makes me feel good.) hi-ho silver! to the point! ive watched the show countless times (we have it taped on vhs + im a nerd = countless times), but i hadnt watched it in a long time. and seeing it again just brought up many thoughts. at the top of that pile of random thoughts and theories and wonderments, there was the amazing realisation that whenever we look at the stars, we see the past. i just think thats amazing. i dont have anything more meaningful to say about that, but just the fact thats its immensly cool. (if you dont know what im talking about, we see the past, because the light arriving from distant stars has taken many millions [or billions] of years to get to us, the stars are really really really really really far away, so the light we see from stars is the light that left the stars millions of years ago, make sense?). but yeah, just thought id leave you with that thought.
whenever we look to the stars, were looking into the past.

The universe rocks!
- anton

PS. were not even made of especially common matter. 90% of the universe is made up of dark matter, which we cant even see. and less than 2% of the universe is made up of the same stuff we are. kinda puts you into perspective. (im not entirely sure about the 2%, but the 90% is 100%. im such a geek.)

Best of 2005.

its been a quiet beginning to the week. so im just gonna stick to things that are simple and fun. lists. movies. and years. so im gonna combine the three into yet another Top 5 list. this time the best movies of 2005 (yeah. you guessed right. im bored). so here goes. top 5 movies of 2005.

1. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang / The Weatherman / Thank You For Smoking
2. Syriana / Brokeback Mountain
3. Good Night, and Good Luck
4. Batman Begins / The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
5. Sin City / V for Vendetta / Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

there you go.. many good movies were omitted from this list. and even then i couldnt narrow it down to five. well. shame. thats just how the cookie crumbles. the pistol pops. and the umbrella opens.

Best of 2006.

lists. who doesnt love 'em? top 5, top 10, top whatever. a good list will cheer you up whenever you see one. so ima start writing my top 5/10 somethings every week, ie one list of my top [choose appropriate noun] every week. great. ill start with the Top 5 movies of 2006. now sadly i didnt have a chance to see as many movies as id have liked in 2006, cos i was in the army half of the year, but nevertheless, i still did see some fantastic releases, and some mediocre ones. but here you have my five favourite movies of 2006 in a neat and tidy list.

1. Little Miss Sunshine
2. Paris, je t'aime/ El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
3. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
3,5. The Departed
4. La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep)
5. Cars / Babel / Casino Royale

tell me what you think. what would you change with the list?

- greenpeace, anton

edit 30.1: there are many movies that might/could be on the list, but arent because i havent had a chance to see them yet... these movies include:Pan's Labyrinth (i believe this has a good chance of making the list), The Last King of Scotland, The Illusionist, Blood Diamond (which hasnt even come to finland yet..)

edit: 8.2: i finally saw The Departed, at it was really good, so now it took its rightful spot in between Borat and Sleep.

edit 17.2: saw El Laberinto del Fauno today (pans labyrinth), and my god its good. go see it. very very good. it almost got its own second place ranking ahead of paris je t'aime, but i decided to let them share it instead. its good. see it.

Up in the ass.

now who ever said finns didnt have a sense of humour?

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wqQhQSbe6fw

(tho on a more personal note, i bet that hurt like hell. but marcus is just so funny.)

One teaspoon of emotion.

i have to repeat a famous line that may or may not be over-used: take time for yourself. i did. and i just realised how great it is. i was chilling at home doing nothing. when im at home chilling i do nothing. it means i waste time. most of the time i waste is used up on the time spent while walking from room to room, relocation. i do that a lot. for no reason. the rest of my time goes to opening the fridge every time i walk past the kitchen and checking if we have something good to eat. we never do. so basically i divide my time between walking around aimlessly and thinking about making something good to eat. now youre probably wondering what this has to do with taking time for oneself, but be patient, im getting there. so now then. today i was wasting time as usual, until i decided to go outside and shovel some snow out of our driveway (its been snowing like hell here, very beautiful, but thats the subject of a different post), or well i was told so by my brother. so i put my iPod on and went outside, with some heavy duty winter-gear. and when i was shoveling snow and listening to coldplay and the shins i realised that life is good. like seriously good. and goddamn i love my friends. so i took a moment and lay in the snow while New Slang (by the shins) and Fix You (coldplay) played through.... and i couldnt have felt better. it was this feeling of just being in the moment and soaking in every second of it. and letting all the wonderful things in ones life go flowing through your head and just being.. happy.

i really really recommend that you do the same some day. doesnt have to be shoveling snow, but anything. lying in the grass on a sunny day, taking a walk in the rain. anything. but it does need to be outside. and you also need good music. or well, lets just say it makes it a whole lot more enjoyable. but that could also just be me, i just love music so much.

so drop whatever you're doing and take a walk. go stand in the rain. or lie down in a big pile of snow. put on one of your favourite songs. and just sink in. forget everything. let that inexplicable feeling of happiness and relaxation wash over you. its worth it.

Change. (announced)

i feel good. finally i get to write something about the progress of my projects/movies, which was after all the main idea behind this blog. but to the point. i have now finally started proper work on my next movie, entitled 'Change'. i havent started writing a script yet, but i have worked out many details involving many of the sequences in the film. i wont tell you about the details in the story yet, because theyre still in a very fluctuating stage. when i finish my rough drafts/plans for all sequences (its sequential movie or whatever the official term is, eg. coffee & cigarettes + Paris je t'aime) and begin writing the actual script youll hear more from me. but this was just to inform you that i am on my way...i also came up with a very rudimentary shooting schedule, which would indicate that this film is going to be a summer block-buster, released sometime in june most probably.

Release Date: June-July 2007

[ive put the status of the project, ie in what stage the film is,in the title of this here post, so you can quickly see where im at, not entirely unlike imDb]

Beautiful World.

life is wonderful. and beautiful. thats a fact. dont argue with me. and now ill leave you for the night with a wonderful and beautiful song.

goodnight, anton

Tori. A place to catch up on life.

some of my friends have probably already heard me rant and rave about this place, but nevertheless, if youre looking for the best café/restuarant in helsinki look no further. it resides on Punavuorenkatu in the heart of helsinki (off to the side a teensie weensie bit), and goes by the simple name of 'Tori' and it offers a very relaxed atmosphere with fantastic foods at a reasonable price. i guess you couldnt ask more of a restaurant. well you couldnt.
ive been to tori only once so far, but i absolutely fell in love with it, and i guess thats why im here telling you about it, its seriously the best place to eat in helsinki. the decoration is very simple, and its a small space, but quite modern, and with the feel of a local café. the music they played when i was there, was alternative and very chilled and good, though if youre looking for that nice classical background music you hear at fancy restaurants with violins and all that jazz, then you should look further. when you sit down in tori it feels like your sitting midst people who are full of ideas, the clientele is very bohemian and many artists reside there (apparently), and this is one of the main features i like about the place - the atmosphere, its hard to explain, but if you go there, youll realise what im talking about.
now, to the food, i had the Tandori chicken salad, which was tantalising and just amazing. it was a very well sized portion, not leaving me with a feeling of hunger whatsoever (and i can eat a lot, trust me), and it was also well priced at just under 10€, if i remember correctly (not too far from 10€ in any case). but apparently, according to NYT, their most famous and best dish is their homemade meatballs and potato muusi, which is also just 10€, and offers a hardy meal for any sizeable man.
but i can recommend this restaurant solely based on that one chicken salad, though it was the atmosphere that really impressed me, go there and find out yourself. try it out. and tell me what you think.

so stop wondering about what you should make for dinner/lunch or breakfast and walk over to Punavuorenkatu 2, in Helsinki, and grab yourself a well priced and delicious meal, and sit down and enjoy life.

ps. it was even rated the 17th best restaurant in Helsinki by viisitähteä.fi (http://www.viisitahtea.fi/content/view/549/51/1/2/), this was amongst "fancy" restaurants. so take that beethoven.

Sundance - Indie?

I just read an article in TIME (January 29, 2007 - woah! its from the future...shit. get the tin foil caps out!) by Richard Corliss, TIMEs movie critic, where he argued that sundance has gone main-stream. basically the gist of the article, was that the movies that come out of the Sundance Film Festival have become predictable and have lost their originality - "…they have devolved into a genre…the theme is relationships, beginning in angst and ending in reconciliation…the focus is often ona dysfunctional family…" reading throught his article (btw, interesting and good article, read it) got me thinking about how i label movies and what "original" movies are.

so now then, ive always been interested in original and quirky movies, and movies that break the mold, so to speak, and i have felt that the words "official selection Sundance Film Festival" have been synonymous with this - low-budget movies, made with passion and a love for films, and often very different from what we are used to seeing in theatres. but are they actually that original? i cant say that ive seen many films that came out of sundance last year, pretty much only Little Miss Sunshine (which is AMAZING, see it.) and i still really want to see Half Nelson and a cpl of others, but nevertheless i havent seen what they had to offer last year, but even according to my image of LMS and the image i have of sundance movies, richard corliss could be right. they do involve dysfunctional families and usual end in a feel good ending (nothing wrong with that per se) and are made with an earthy/real feel to them. now imo theres nothing wrong with this, but if this becomes the standard, and sundance just starts churning out films that are each more similar than the last, then whats gonna happen to the indie-film?

i feel like this is the same phenomenon as i keep seeing in our "youth culture", where its become, during the past year, hip to be different. and if youre not different youre not in or cool. which is in itself a contradiction, "Be yourself, just like everyone else" (thnx axl). and this could be the case with sundance/indie movies as well, couldnt it? i dont know. all i can say is that i hope it isnt the case and never will be. but with movies from sundance all seeming similar (i base this on what ive seen, and trailers [not very solid i know, but its the image i get, or is it just because of this article i read?]) we might be losing indie-film to conformity. what i think people need to think about/learn/realise is that being different is not something to try to achieve and it is not that different actually, people should just accept themselves and be what they are - themselves. human. erronous. flawed. but still wonderful in their OWN quirky ways.

so dont be different. be yourself.

hope this didnt sound too pretentious, and please tell me what you think about this. cos the article really got me thinking, but then i couldnt completely decide whether this is actually the case with sundance movies, or if im just lettting myself be influenced by a well written article.... i gotta watch more sundance movies, and then ill get back to you.

and now ill leave you with a song from one of my favourite movies

The Shins. Awesome.

Now that i got into this i cant seem to stop. oh no! help me i cant stop. yes. anyhoo. The Shins are an amazing band, had to clear that first, and now they came out with a new album - Wincing the Night Away. it was released today in the States and will be released on the 29th in the UK, if i remember correctly, lets hope it comes to finland soon after that. but, now, to the main selling point of this post, previews (Schnell! Schnell!), i have obtained the rights to preview a couple of songs from their album right here on my blog, now how awesome am i? come on, give it to me..theere you go. well no. i found them on a random internet radioblog thingy. so here goes, i give you the Shins - Wincing the Night Away

Champagne and caviar not included.

Allrighty then, this is the real opening of this here blog. So to explain what this is gonna be about. Firstly, and mainly, this is supposed to be a place where you can keep up with my projects, ie. movies, hence the name of the site Random Entertainment. Those of you who know me know what this means. So... ill keep posting here with new developments in my scripts and shootings and whatnot. However, i will also post random comments on whatever i might find interesting at any given moment. So what you might see here are short reviews of movies ive just seen or posts about something funky/interesting/astonishing/unbelieveable or otherwise eye-catching thats happened in the world. and i think ill make it a habit to add a good song to listen to at the end of every post, i think this will go down well with the audience. yes. i do believe so. but without further ado, i give you "dot dot dot. and i feel fine" - a blog about life and everything associated with it.

and to finish this off, one of my most favouritest songs of favourite songs, ever: 'Chicago' by Sufjan Stevens
